Setting Value Colors
Use value colors to give a chart value the same color every time it appears. Use Value colors to pick a color for each value in a Field Segmentation Pie or Donut chart. Use Consistent value colors to show the same value in the same color on every chart that has the option enabled.
By default, Axonius gives colors to the values of a chart by the position of each value. When the order of the values changes, the colors change too, and the same value can have a different color on two charts.
Picking a Color for Each Value
Use Value colors to fix the color of a value in a Field Segmentation Pie or Donut chart. The value keeps the color on every refresh, whatever its size or position in the chart.
Permissions: To add a chart, you need the Dashboards > Charts > Add permission. To edit a chart, you need the Dashboards > Charts > Edit permission. Every user who can see the chart sees the colors.
To pick a color for each value:
- On a dashboard, click Add Chart, or edit a Field Segmentation chart.
- In Widget, select Field Segmentation.
- Select the module, the query, and the Segment by field, and select the Pie or Donut view.
- Wait for the preview to show the chart values.
- In Presentation, in Value colors, click the color box next to a value.
- Select a color.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each value that needs a fixed color.
- Click Save.
- The list shows the values of the preview, up to 20 values. It also shows values that have a picked color but aren't in the preview now.
- Before the preview shows values, the list shows the text "The chart's values are listed once the preview shows them".
- The color picker offers the colors of the dashboard palette.
- To remove a picked color, click the close icon next to the value. The value goes back to the normal colors.
- Values without a picked color keep the normal colors.
- Only the Pie and Donut views of the Field Segmentation chart have Value colors. The Pie and Donut views of the Pivot chart have the same list.
- Value colors change only how the chart looks. They don't change the chart data.
Example: A Field Segmentation Donut chart shows devices by a severity field with the values Critical, High, Medium, and Low. Set Critical to red, High to orange, Medium to yellow, and Low to green. When the High slice becomes larger than the Critical slice, the colors don't move.
Using Consistent Value Colors Across Charts
Use Consistent value colors to show the same value in the same color on every chart. For example, if you use two pie charts to compare servers and workstations, Linux has the same color in both charts.
Permissions: To add a chart, you need the Dashboards > Charts > Add permission. To edit a chart, you need the Dashboards > Charts > Edit permission. Users who can only view the dashboard see the colors, but they can't change the option.
To use consistent value colors:
- On a dashboard, click Add Chart, or edit a chart.
- Select Field Segmentation or Pivot Chart.
- Select the Pie, Donut, or Bar view.
- Set the chart fields as usual.
- In Presentation, enable Consistent value colors.
- Click Save.
- Repeat steps 1 to 6 for each chart that must use the same colors.
- By default, this option is disabled. The color of a value comes from its position in the chart.
- When this option is enabled, the color comes from the text of the value. The same value text has the same color on every chart that has the option enabled, on all dashboards.
- A chart with the option disabled keeps its usual colors, also for the same values.
- The colors come from the dashboard palette, which has a limited number of colors. Two different values can have the same color.
- In a Field Segmentation Bar chart, the bar color picker is hidden while the option is enabled, because each bar gets the color of its value.
- The option changes only the colors. The data, the counts, and the order of the values don't change.
Example: Two pie charts show devices by operating system: one chart for servers and one chart for workstations. Linux is the second slice in one chart and the fourth slice in the other chart, so it has two colors. Enable Consistent value colors in both charts. Linux now has the same color in both charts.
Understanding Which Color Applies
When a chart can get its colors from more than one setting, Axonius uses this order:
- Threshold colors - When you set threshold colors for a chart, the threshold colors apply. Value colors and Consistent value colors have no effect. See Setting Threshold Colors.
- Value colors - A color that you pick for a value applies before the consistent color.
- Consistent value colors - The color comes from the text of the value.
- The normal colors of the dashboard palette.
