Using Fields of Related Assets in Charts
Use Field from to group a chart by, or measure in a chart, a field of an asset type that is related to the chart's asset type. For example, group Devices by the Department of their related Users.
The related asset type is connected to the chart's asset type through one Asset Graph relationship, predefined or custom. The Field Segmentation, Pivot, Field Summary, and Asset Data charts support related fields.
Permissions:
- To add or edit a chart, you need the Dashboards > Charts > Add or Dashboards > Charts > Edit permission.
- To use a field of a related asset type, you need the View permission on that asset type. Without it, the chart shows the message "You do not have permission to view

Where You Can Use Related Fields
- Group by a related field - In the Segment by field of a Field Segmentation chart, and in the Dimensions of a Pivot chart.
- Measure a related field - In the Metrics of a Pivot chart, in a Field Summary chart, and in the columns of an Asset Data chart. The column of an Asset Data chart is named
<related asset type>:<field>.
Related fields work with live data and with historical dates.
How the Chart Counts Related Assets
- Each related asset counts once in each group. An asset with the related values A and B counts once in group A and once in group B. The wizard shows the message "An asset can be in more than one group."
- An asset with no related asset shows in the group No related asset. An asset with no value shows in the group No Value. These groups appear only when Include entities with no value is enabled. See Including Entities with No Value.
- A related asset outside your data scope doesn't count.
- Click a group to open the asset table with the base query, a relationship condition for the value, and the relationship column. See Chart Click-Through.
Limits
- A chart can use one relationship only. The wizard shows the message "This chart uses the relationship "
". A chart can use only one relationship." - A chart can group by only one related field.
- A chart can't group by a related field and also measure a related field. The wizard shows the message "A chart cannot group by a related field and also measure a related field."
- You can't filter the values of a related field. The wizard shows the message "You cannot filter the values of a related field."
- A related field of a segment doesn't support Exclude Adapters, Only from connections, or Refine Data.
- The Maximum and Minimum functions aren't available for a related field.
- Related fields aren't available on asset profile dashboards.
- When a chart has too many related assets or values, the chart stops and shows a message.
- When the relationship was removed or changed, the wizard shows the message "The relationship of this field was removed. Select a relationship." and you can't save the chart. The chart on the dashboard shows a message and no data.
Example: A Field Segmentation chart on Devices shows how many devices each department uses.
- Add a Field Segmentation chart and select Devices as the module.
- In Segment by, open Field from and select the relationship between Devices and Users.
- Select the field Department.
- Click Save.
The chart shows a bar for each department of the related Users. A device that two users from different departments use counts once in each department.
