Title needs to change to - consult Shira!!!!

Use the search bar at the top of each Axonius page to identify and investigate specific assets or queries.

While you can always use the Query Wizard to create granular asset queries with a wide variety of filters, Axonius Global Search is a quick, direct way to type in a string and find all the assets or query names it appears in.

Another option is to add Axonius as a 'new' search engine in Google Chrome to search for assets in Axonius directly from the Google Chrome address bar. See Searching for Assets Directly from Google Chrome Address Bar for more information.

Searching for a Specific Asset or Query

Upon entering free text into the search bar, the search runs on all asset types, the field names available for searching those assets, and queries. To learn which fields are searchable for each asset type, see Fields Available for Search.

📘

Note

To run the search, you must be logged in to Axonius.

Click the search bar to open the Search Axonius dialog, or type Ctrl + Y for shortcut. The dialog contains two sections: Recently Searched results and Recently Viewed results (where the specific page of this result was viewed). If this is your first search ever, those sections are empty.

SearchAxoniusDialog

After typing at least three characters in the search bar, a list of results instantly appears, and updates as you keep on typing.

📘

Note

The Search function is not case-sensitive.

The search results are displayed in two tabs:

Assets

This tab shows which asset types were found by the string you typed and how many assets were found in total. Use the Asset type dropdown to filter results by a specific asset type.

Under each asset, the fields the string was found in are listed. Hover over a result to see the values of these fields. Watch an animated demonstration of the full flow:

Click Clear to view results from all asset types again.

See Customizing Global Search Settings to learn how to define specific searchable fields for each asset type.

Queries

This tab shows which queries were found by the string you typed and which asset types they are associated with.

  • Use the Asset type dropdown to filter results by a specific asset type.

    📘

    Note

You can also view results found in Adapter Fetch History (under the Other Modules section in the dropdown).

  • Use the Tag dropdown to filter results by a specific tag. Note that this dropdown lists all tags saved in the systems, even if they don't apply to any query.

  • Hover over a result to:

    • View query details such as Folder Path and Tags.

    • Click View Query to view the query drawer.

      📘

      Note

Exiting the query drawer makes you also exit the search dialog.

  • Run the query for instant results. You can also click on a result to run its query.

Watch an animated demonstration of the full flow:

Click Clear to view results from all asset types again.

Viewing Search Results

Click View all Results to view all the full list of results your string returned.

If you are in the Assets tab, you'll see all the assets found. Use the left navigation pane to select a specific Assets page to view results in.

  • In each Assets page, your search is translated to a Query Wizard expression. The query includes all the fields that were searched with OR conditions between them. See for example this query:

    SearchQuery
  • All default fields are added automatically to the query even if they did not return results.

  • If results were found in fields that do not exist in your default view, those fields are automatically added to the table. For example: if the default view of the Devices page does not include the Device Manufacturer Serial field, and you run a search that finds a relevant result in that field - the results table on the Devices page will include the Device Manufacturer Serial field as well.

  • See the Assets Page documentation for additional information on actions you can perform on each Assets page to manage the assets found: create queries, edit the table columns, refine data, export data, and more.

If you are in the Queries tab, you'll see all the queries found. Use the left navigation pane to select a specific folder to view results in.

Existing and Resuming the Search

To exit the search results view and reset the current Assets or Queries page to their default views, click the Reset button of the Assets or Queries table. You won't be able to go back to the search page unless you click the search bar again and select it from the Recently Searched section.

To resume a search, if it appears in the Recently Searched section, click on it to run it again.

Your last search is saved and can be accessed from the search bar of any page. To clear the search bar, click X.

Customizing Global Search Settings

You can customize your Global Search settings per asset type as follows:

  1. Decide whether to exclude or include specific asset types in the Global Search. Global Search will not return results from excluded asset types.
  2. Change an asset type's default searchable fields by configuring up to 10 fields to search the asset by. This allows a more accurate search, tailored to your needs. Only string-type fields are supported for configuring.
📘

Notes

  1. Only Admins can edit Global Search settings.
  2. When you edit the list of searchable fields for a selected asset type, it becomes manually managed, so that any change made to the list by Axonius (such as adding or removing default fields to search) will no longer apply. To change that, you can reset the list of searchable fields back to the Axonius default.

To edit search settings:

  1. From the Search Axonius dialog, select Settings.
SearchSettings
  1. You are directed to System Settings > Data > Global Search Fields. This page lists all asset types available for Global Search and which of their fields are searchable. The Last Update column indicates the last time the search settings of each asset type were manually updated.
  2. Click on a row to open the Global search settings for [Asset Type Name] dialog.
  3. Toggle Enable Global Search for this asset on or off to include or exclude it from search results. This setting is enabled by default for most asset types.
  4. Editing searchable fields: on the left, all fields available for search are listed; on the right, all fields currently used for global search are listed. Select fields from the right to remove, or fields from the left to add. You can set up to 10 searchable fields.
EditSearchSettings
  1. Click Save to save your changes, or Cancel to discard them. You can also click Reset to system default to reset the list of searchable fields to the Axonius default.
  2. After saving your changes, the Last Update column updates with the date and time of the changes.
📘

Note

The changes made to the searchable fields list may take up to 6 hours to apply.

Searching for Assets Directly from Google Chrome Address Bar

📘

Note
